    Why Obama? He gets it...

I know most won't read this long speech but maybe, just maybe someone will and after reading what Obama really thinks, you might appreciate just how typically and uniquely American he really is and for some flyboy punk to suggest he would lose a war to win an election is just trash spoken from the mouth of trash.

First the paraphrased short version. Obama is saying that the problems challenging the world, from global warming to terrorism are too vast for one nation or one continent to solve alone. It is a time when men and women of goodwill must unite in common cause so that we might finally achieve justice and peace throughout the world.

    And now the meat:
I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before. Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen - a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.

I know that I don't look like the Americans who've previously spoken in this great city. The journey that led me here is improbable. My mother was born in the heartland of America, but my father grew up herding goats in Kenya. His father - my grandfather - was a cook, a domestic servant to the British.

At the height of the Cold War, my father decided, like so many others in the forgotten corners of the world, that his yearning - his dream - required the freedom and opportunity promised by the West. And so he wrote letter after letter to universities all across America until somebody, somewhere answered his prayer for a better life.

That is why I'm here. And you are here because you too know that yearning. This city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom. And you know that the only reason we stand here tonight is because men and women from both of our nations came together to work, and struggle, and sacrifice for that better life.

you can't post the full thing... that's plagiarism -- especially when you're not quoting it.

Cut out the text of the speech, leave a link to it, and leave your summary.

You can post excerpts. And use the quote function to make it clear that you're quoting. These were my favourite parts. I think it's a good speech ...

And if we're honest with each other, we know that sometimes, on both sides of the Atlantic, we have drifted apart, and forgotten our shared destiny.

In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right, has become all too common. In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe's role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth ... In this new century, Americans and Europeans alike will be required to do more - not less. Partnership and cooperation among nations is not a choice; it is the one way, the only way, to protect our common security and advance our common humanity.

That is why the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another.
That is why America cannot turn inward. That is why Europe cannot turn inward. America has no better partner than Europe. It was this spirit that led airlift planes to appear in the sky above our heads, and people to assemble where we stand today. And this is the moment when our nations - and all nations - must summon that spirit anew.
I know my country has not perfected itself. At times, we've struggled to keep the promise of liberty and equality for all of our people. We've made our share of mistakes, and there are times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions.

He does get it. I have an aunt and friends in Berlin who would also say he gets it. He is very smart to speak outside of America right now.

This is different. After McCain's stumble on Czechoslovakia, this was a really astute speech. Not only does he understand the history of the city and its importance in ending WWII, he also found a way to celebrate a famous American contribution to democracy and peace in a time when there are doubters about the USA everywhere. He reached out intelligently to a key historical ally. It was a very well thought out speech. Strong points about partnerships, where he highlights the need to adapt to changing times and situations ...

Look at Berlin, where Germans and Americans learned to work together and trust each other less than three years after facing each other on the field of battle.

Amazing ain't that you can't find appeasement anywhere in that speech, which no doubt will become policy commencing January '09. Obama is now being advised by Colin Powell on foreign policy and even Brent Scowcroft, who served in the Ford and Bush41 administrations and Zbig Brezinski who served in the Carter administration agree that the Bush/McCain policy on Iran is whacked.

BTW, I've never seen anywhere, understandable instructions on how to use the quote feature. Maybe instead of writing nasty emails to posters one of the mods could 'splain it to me like I'm a 6 year old.

When you're in the message box, highlight the excerpt from the article you want to quote. Then hit the third icon from the right (just above the message box). That will put the QUOTE code around the text.

The Raptors TM did a really good job of posting instructions in this thread.

debates are sufficient. obama is good at them, McCain is not. Obama doesn't have a problem saying something to someone's face. and once again he is far from a socialist.

I can't wait for the part of his speech where he admitted america made mistakes to be spun into "Obama hates america", "Obama isn't proud of america", "Obama doesn't support the troops", "Obama undermines the troops". I just can't wait for the Hannity spin machine to have a few quarters dropped in it.

Besides the test and substance of the speech, did anyone note that over 200,000 people came to listen to the guy? Talk about getting some credibility back on a worldwide level. This guy looks like he could undue all of the damage of GW and then some.
