Blue Jackets Announce 2008-09 Regular Season, Pre-Season Schedules
Columbus opens eighth NHL campaign at Dallas on Oct. 10 with home-opener set for Friday, Oct. 17 vs. Nashville
The Columbus Blue Jackets and National Hockey League announced the 2008-09 regular season schedule July 17 and the Blue Jackets will open their eighth National Hockey League season on Friday, October 10 against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center. That game will be the first of a season-opening three-game road trip against Pacific Division opponents that includes games at Phoenix on October 11 and San Jose on October 14. The Blue Jackets host the Nashville Predators in the club's home-opener on Friday, October 17. This year marks the third time in eight seasons that Columbus has opened the season on the road and the first in which it has played multiple games on the road before playing at home.

The NHL schedule for 2008-09 features a continued emphasis on division rivalries, but this year will see each club play each of the other 29 member clubs either at home or on the road. The new schedule matrix provides six games against divisional opponents, four against non-divisional conference opponents and 18 against non-conference opponents, including home-and-home series against three out of conference teams. As members of the Western Conference's Central Division, the Blue Jackets will play Chicago, Detroit, Nashville and St. Louis six times and every other Western Conference team four times. In addition to home-and-home sets against Pittsburgh, Washington and the New York Islanders, Columbus will also host Eastern Conference foes Boston, Montreal, New Jersey, New York Rangers, Philadelphia and Ottawa at Nationwide Arena this season.

The Blue Jackets' schedule features 41 home and 41 away games, spans 184 days and concludes on April 11 against the Minnesota Wild at Nationwide Arena. The club will play 44 of its 82 games on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, including 19 of its 41 home games (Friday 6, Saturday 10, Sunday 3). All home games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. except for the following Nov. 5 vs. Edmonton (7:30 p.m.), Mar. 15 vs. Detroit (5 p.m.), Mar. 29 vs. St. Louis (5 p.m.) and Apr. 5 vs. Chicago (5 p.m.).

A highlight of the home schedule is that all 16 teams that qualified for the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs will play in Nationwide Arena this season. Other highlights include: three visits by the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings (Jan. 27, Feb. 13 and Mar. 15); current NHL most valuable player Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals on Nov. 29; Sidney Crosby and the Eastern Conference champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Mar. 12; and appearances by "Original Six" teams, the New York Rangers (Oct. 24), Montreal Canadiens (Nov. 7) and Boston Bruins (Mar. 10). The club's longest homestand is four games, which occurs twice Nov. 5-12, 2008 and Jan. 27-Feb. 3, 2009 and its longest stretch of road games is six from Dec. 29, 2008-Jan. 9, 2009.
