Sharks Re-Sign Cavanagh and Staubitz
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group VI restricted free agent right wing Tom Cavanagh to a one-year contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In 2007-08, Cavanagh, 26, played 77 games with the Worcester Sharks, the top development American Hockey League affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, tallying 55 points (19-36=55), 55 penalty minutes, and a -4 rating. He finished tied for second on the team with 55 points and also placed second in assists with 36. He made his National Hockey League debut on April 3 against Los Angeles and posted an assist for his first NHL point on his first NHL shift with San Jose.
“Tom was a very consistent player with Worcester last season,” said Wilson. “His play, especially towards the end of the season, was deserving of a reward and he was able to contribute in the game he played in the NHL.”
In 2006-07, Cavanagh, was fourth on Worcester with 44 points, with 12 goals and 32 assists, all of which were career highs at the time.
The six-foot, 200-pound right wing was selected by San Jose in the sixth round (182nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
SHARKS RE-SIGN RIGHT WING BRAD STAUBITZ
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group II restricted free agent right wing Brad Staubitz to a one-year contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In 2007-08, Staubitz, 23, played a career-high 73 games posting 20 points (6-14=20) with Worcester, the San Jose Sharks top development affiliate in the American Hockey League. He also recorded 195 penalty minutes, which was second on the team.
“Brad is a big, strong player that has shown improvement in his three seasons in our organization,” said Wilson. “We asked him to change from defense to forward and he has accepted the challenge and is making the most of it.”
In 2006-07, Staubitz posted five points (1-4=5) in 51 games with Worcester. He was second on the team with 137 penalty minutes. He accumulated 13 penalty minutes in five Calder Cup Playoff games.
Staubitz was signed as an undrafted free agent on September 19, 2005.
