TORONTO (TICKER) —Brian Campbell, the most sought-after defenseman on the free-agent market, reportedly received a hefty chunk of change from the Chicago Blackhawks.

Campbell and the Blackhawks have agreed to an eight-year contract worth $56.8 million, according to a report by TSN of Canada on Tuesday.

Campbell, 29, scored eight goals and 62 points in 83 combined games this past season with the Buffalo Sabres and San Jose Sharks.

Huge contract, at bit overpriced for his defense, but sharks had the money to match and therefore should have, as they need a puck handling, offensive defensman, which Campbell excells at.

Sad day in Bay Area Sports, as both Baron Davis and Brian Campbell are now gone.

no way, i would have been pissed if we had given him an 8 year contract, maybe a 4-5, but 8???? dudes gonna be 37 years old and we're paying him 8 million??? we have bigger fish to sign in the future with nabbys contract coming up and for 8 million a year we can def grab a young all star with plenty of future

That contract is vastly over-inflated; kudos to Campbell and his agent for being able to exploit the desperate GMs of July 1-2.

Campbell is not Lidstrom. He only scored 8 goals last year. He won't suddenly begin to net 20.

The real loss for the Sharks is what they gave up for Campbell in Steve Bernier and the first round pick (which turned into Tyler Ennis, pegged by EJ Maguire, Chief of Central Scouting, as possibly the most gifted offensive talent of this year's draft).

Add that to the fact that the entire league lost a year to prevent this insanity.

Your right of course. What you say makes more sense. Soupy's just been one of my favorite non shark players for a long time, so I'm very sad to see him go.
