    Carlos, not Esmailyn

A top Washington Nationals prospect and recipient of the largest international signing bonus in team history is not who he appeared to be. Esmailyn Gonzalez, who is listed as 19 years old on the team's roster, is actually 23-year-old Carlos Alvarez Daniel Lugo, four sources have told SI.com.

The Nationals, owned by the Lerner family, gave the shortstop from the Dominican Republic a $1.4 million signing bonus on July 2, 2006, and trumpeted his arrival as a sign of their commitment to acquiring top-tier talent. (Players from Latin America are not subject to the draft and can sign with the team of their choice.) "This signing is symbolic of the Lerner family's and incoming club president Stan Kasten's pledge to become an industry leader in scouting and player development,'' Washington general manager Jim Bowden said at the time of the deal.

Gonzalez's signing, however, immediately drew suspicion from baseball insiders. There was considerable skepticism about the team's description of him as a five-tool player. "He doesn't run all that well, and has an average arm," an executive with another team said this summer.

...Nationals representatives, Rijo and Vizcaino did not return calls from SI.com requesting comment. Kasten and Major League Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney declined to comment. Bowden and Rijo have previously denied any financial improprieties in the Gonzalez case.

^ The above story I posted is a bit disturbing. I know players lie about their age all too much, but name too? I look at him totally differently now. I'm not sure what expectations to have.

I think this may be what had the Feds so interested a year ago. Smiley's connections to the Nats raised some red flags. SI really became relevant again this week. Bringing down A-Rod and potentially Jim Bowden and Rijo in one week.

    Ian Desmond

Washington shortstop Ian Desmond missed out on a full season in 2008 because of a stress fracture in his left hamate bone. Desmond, with Class AA Harrisburg at the time, had surgery in June. The 23-year-old, now on Washington's 40-man roster, arrived in spring training this year feeling no pain.

But the results of his routine physical indicated what one team official today described as an "abnormal finding." In other words: Desmond's hand still shows the sign of a stress fracture.

"It either didn't heal correctly or it came back," Desmond said.

On Monday, Desmond will fly to Baltimore to see hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham, who will determine the next step. The previous surgery was performed by Dr. Richard Barth.

Before leaving for the consultation, Desmond will be able to fully participate in Washington's workouts.

    JimBo under investiation

    According to SI.com's Melissa Segura:

A federal investigation into the skimming of signing bonuses given to baseball prospects from Latin America is looking at Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden as far back as 1994, when he was GM of the Cincinnati Reds, according to a baseball executive familiar with the investigation.

The Bowden investigation is linked to the David Wilder scandal by way of a scout named Jorge Oquendo. The Chicago Tribune just posted new details on Wilder this evening. Segura doesn't suggest it, but you have to think Bowden's job is in jeopardy.

    Nats ownership want Bowden gone???

behind the scenes, according to sources, some within the team's ownership group -- which includes Managing Principal Owner Theodore N. Lerner, seven principal owners and nine founding partners -- are eager to cut ties with the general manager they inherited almost three years ago, and see the investigation as a way of facilitating Bowden's exit. The Nationals, one source said, are encouraging the investigation to return an answer on Bowden so the parties can "go on their merry way."

^Well finally, things may be coming to an end. The Rizzo era for GM is long overdue.

Agreed. Bowden is now "on the clock". The post-mortems on him will be interesting. He did a lot of good things given the circumstances...some things that were bad...and some things that just caused me to shake my head in wonderment.

    BA top 100

Baseball America released their top 100 prospects today. Only one National makes the list, and it's Jordan Zimmermann at #41.

    Jays assistant GM being considered

According to John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus:

The Nationals, according to multiple industry sources, are strongly considering firing general manager Jim Bowden and replacing him with Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava.

This rumor first surfaced on Ed Chigliak's Federal Baseball blog yesterday. Fire Jim Bowden rounded up a bunch of info on LaCava. I've heard the Nationals may also consider in-house candidates such as Deric Ladnier and Mike Rizzo.

    Rijo gone

The Washington Nationals have made the decision to fire Jose Rijo, the member of their front office most closely linked to the Smiley Gonzalez fraud, a source with knowledge of the situation said tonight. Rijo owns and operates a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, which the Nationals have used as their scouting base in Latin America.

Rijo, who has worked for the team since 2005 as a special assistant to the general manager, had taken a forced leave of absence from his job this weekend and returned to the Dominican Republic. Now, that leave has become permanent.

^^ Now with Rijo gone, hopefully this is step 1. Assistant to the GM gone, next is Bowden.

This is such a terrible position for the team and Bowden to be in right now. But it does seem like dead man walking time. Even if Bowden is not guilty of a crime here, there were some misjudgements that need to be addressed. Rizzo is ready for the move.

Bowden may go, but I think we owe him more than showing him his hat on the way out the door.

    Just my humble opinion.
