    Smoker has surgery

WASHINGTON -- Nationals left-hander Josh Smoker underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his left shoulder. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, and reported that Smoker's labrum and rotator cuff appeared to be normal.

Smoker, who was a sandwich pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, should begin physical therapy immediately, with the expectation of starting a throwing program in six weeks. He is expected to be ready for Spring Training 2009.

In two professional seasons, Smoker, who also attends Stanford University, made 13 starts, giving up 23 earned runs in 18 innings.

    This is just funny...

According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have already made an offer to free agent infielder Felipe Lopez. Lopez, a Scott Boras client, is said to desire a multiyear contract on the strength of this year's resurgent 169 plate appearances with the Cards.

Keith Law's thoughts on Lopez: "He's not a .385 hitter and probably isn't even a .300 hitter, but as a guy who could easily hit .280/.350/.400 and play a capable second base, he's one of the best infield options on this market." However, Law notes that Lopez's effort level has been questioned often.

^^ joke of the day? haha

Well good for him if he gets deal. To be fair, he has shown flashes of goodness, but it sure wasn't working out here. And I think Keith Law is being a little generous.

    Former Nat signs elsewhere.

Veteran right-handed reliever Chris Schroder, who spent the previous three seasons with Washington, signed a major league contract Wednesday with the Oakland Athletics.

During his career, a span of 62 games, the 30-year-old has compiled a 2-5 record with a 4.46 ERA. He had just four relief appearances last season at the major league level, but also went 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 43 appearances with Columbus, Washington's Triple-A affiliate.

I never understood why Schroder didn't get more shots in the majors with the Nats. He wasn't that bad and if he had a chance to get in a groove...who knows.

Thre have been several of those types of players where I didn't understand the rationale for how they were being used -- Ryan Church under Robinson at the top of the list. Schroder is another.

I'm worried because Colome finished up the season pretty strong. They wouldn't even use him for a while unless the game was out of reach.

    Minor Surgery For Redding

    From Nationals Journal:

Pitcher Tim Redding is scheduled to have minor surgery on his left foot this Friday, the Nationals announced today. The surgery, performed by new team medical director Dr. Wiemi Douoguih and Union Memorial Hospital (Baltimore) foot/ankle specialist Lew Schon, will aim to repair damage to the bone in the joint at the base of Redding's second toe.

Redding, the team said, is expected to be ready to go by the start of spring training.

Hey I am not sure where to but who do you think Nationals will pick with 1st Overall Pick in 09 MLB Draft. My Guess (Stepen Stansburg) I think could be an amazing ace for the Nats in the future.

Oh yes, we won the Race for Strasburg (you were close ) so this is pretty much a no brainer. Pitching is always the place to start so if we somehow mess this one up, well, I won't be a happy camper.

Jan 3, 2009 - Former Nederland Bulldog and Lamar Cardinal Brian Sanches signed a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins on Saturday. The 30-year old right handed reliever pitched last season for the Washington Nationals. Sanches, in 12 games for the Nats went 2-0 with a 7.36 ERA. Sanches made his big league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies and has now pitched in 42 games in his major league career. He is 3-1 with a 6.13 ERA lifetime.

    Oh well. No biggie.

Tough to see a guy have to retire. He had the potential too...just couldn't overcome those injury problems.
