Hoosiers offer coaching job to Bennett
Indiana offered its men's basketball coaching job to Tony Bennett one day after his Washington State team was knocked out of the NCAA tournament, a pair of sources told FOXSports.com.
Former Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson was forced out towards the end of the season in the wake of a second NCAA investigation involving illegal phone calls. He was replaced on an interim basis by Dan Dakich, who was at the helm when the Hoosiers lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Arkansas.
The names that had surfaced were Bennett, Xavier's Sean Miller, Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon and Vanderbilt's Kevin Stallings.
However, the Hoosiers' administration wasted little time in making a play for Bennett — who may also draw interest from other jobs — including LSU and California.
Bennett, 38, took over the program two years ago when his father, Dick, retired. He took a team that was expected to finish in the cellar in the Pac-10 and led the Cougars to consecutive 25-plus-win seasons and a pair of NCAA tournament appearances.
He was rewarded with a seven-year deal prior to this season that paid $800,000 per season.
Washington State went to the Sweet 16 this season for the first time since 1941. The Cougars were 24-8 in the regular season, finished in third place in the Pac-10 and advanced to the Sweet 16 — where they lost to North Carolina on Thursday.
Bennett, who is 52-17 in his two seasons in Pullman, will lose three key senior starters — the starting backcourt of Derrick Lowe and Kyle Weaver as well as forward Robbie Cowgill.
Bennett played at Wisconsin-Green Bay and coached with his father as an assistant at Wisconsin. His sister, Kathi, was also the women's basketball coach at Indiana.
