Hmm that sounds right. Yeah all he needs is a good slider and a solid change up to give hitters a third look. But that fastball is going to serve him a long career.

So when will the comparisons begin? Gooden, Darling, Fernandez, Aguilera and Ojeda vs. Wheeler, Harvey, Niese, Syndergaard and [Mejia/Familia/Montero/Tapia]? I wish we had comps to Orosco, McDowell, Sisk, Niemann, et al. Which of the kids will step up and join Parnell in the pen....Edgin, Carson, Mejia, Familia, ERamirez, Goeddel, Gorksi....?
Those scouting reports on Plawecki and Nimmo sound disastrous. Neither have made it out of Brooklyn and they're already being projected as average regulars or backups? And no mention of Matt Reynolds, the 2nd round utility infielder. Sandy has done well with trades, but his drafts look honestly kind of terrible relative to what you'd expect. Two drafts, and with our 1st rounders, supplemental picks, and 2nd rounders we come out with Gavin Cecchini, Brandon Nimmo, Michael Fulmer, Kevin Plawecki, Matt Reynolds, Cory Mazzoni, and a did not sign? That's a lot of high draft picks and a lot of guys who do not look like future high end talent.
I'm hoping Matt Reynolds could be a Daniel Murphy type player with better defense. That kind of guy has value. Plawecki sounds like a good all-around catcher that showed some unexpected pop in Brooklyn.
Nimmo is still very young and has a lot of time to develop into his frame. I'm not worried about his platoon splits either because that is to be expected from a young HS kid from Wyoming. He's probably faced very few LHP in his life.
Fulmer is looking like a nice mid-rotation arm with #2 upside.
Cecchini could turn out to be a solid starting SS in this league. Too early to tell with any of them.
I will agree a bit here.
The word on Nimmo is that his speed is just not good enough for him to stay at center and once you project him to be a corner outfielder, then his bat has to be plus for him to be above average offensively. As of now he does project as an average regular, but he is still so young and raw that he could develop into more.
The Matt Reynolds pick was horrible imo, I just did not like it.
The Plawecki pick was not a personal favorite either, I had many guys I would of rather had over him. I felt he could of been there in the 2nd round and if he was, then other guys with similar ability would of been there.
Cecchini is a guy I liked because of the position he plays and I get drafting him, I would of preferred Hawkins or Giolito even if he needed TJ surgery.
I love the Fulmer pick, in another year he would of been drafted in the top 20 picks imo.
The Mazzoni pick was decent, not going to say it was bad or great. He has some potential.
Stankewickz is the guy that did not sign, so they get a do over.
Scouting Book has Plawecki as the #11 catching prospect, They have d'Arnaud as the #1 prospect.
And while Nimmo might not be a CFer, Sickels has put a Nick Markakis comp on him.
The biggest complaint is that he hasn't drafted an impact bat. In fact if you look at the entire farm system of hitters you could see that this is a bottom 1/3 system.
But the pitchers in this farm system is probably a top 5 system, and that's with Matt Harvey graduating. The whole system is being carried by the pitchers.
Cecchini and Nimmo are 3 to 4 years away. Nimmo has a professional approach that will only get better for such a raw talent. Gavin has 4 plus tools, with his power the only tool that will be probably be average.
Plus with the acquisition of Travis, the Mets can take their time with Plawecki. They can let him develop into an offensive catcher he was drafted to be.
The Mets positional farm system may be weak now, but with this FO persistent attempt to develop a farm system that can supplement the parent club. The system will eventually be a top 10 system year in year out.
Obviously continuing to lose as they have been the last 4 years and continuing to draft in the top 15 spots of the draft will eventually allow this farm to have some impact bats to go along with their pitching.
With that said though they still have not drafted an impact bat in their 2 years here, am hoping this year is different.
Syndergaard and d'Arnaud were both supplemental picks. You don't just low #1 picks.
Between 2006 and 2009 the Mets had 2 #1, One being Havens and the being Davis, both being in 2008.
The Mets in that same time frame drafted Kunz, Holt, and Vineyard in the supplemental.
We will see how Fulmer and Plawecki fair, hopefully better than the previous 3.
