I also made sure to include wRC+ which is park and league adjusted but is not position adjusted. But you didn't care to factor that in whatsoever before making your post did you now? I agree with you that in this case WAR isn't very useful in this particular situation when comparing Ichiro's production to Martin's, because their WARs are so close for 2012 and that stat should be used more as like a barometer of a player's total value. When WAR values are that close it's not that helpful in giving you a definitive answer for who is better because of the inherent risks associated with the defensive component of the stat. But it does give a frame of reference for their approximate value when compared to their positional peers offensively and defensively which lets you know which player may be the better "value." I meant to add it in for context purposes, not necessarily to fortify my opinion of which one is better than the other in a vacuum. And when you look at the last 2 seasons as a whole, the difference in WAR is more pronounced, and when coupled with the fact that Martin at 29 is more likely to improve in the next two seasons than Ichiro is at 39, my opinion that Martin is a better overall bet going forward stands to reason.
