Gabbert was "benched" because he was playing with a shoulder injury that requires surgery, the same injury that has caused Jake Locker to miss more than half the season so far, then sustained a forearm injury which would require some time to heal. Gabbert was "benched" because the team is going nowhere this year, and it is in their best interest to lose all of their remaining games. He was two for two passing and moving the team offensively when he came out of his last game. You make it sound like Mularkey pulled him after three quarters and having thrown four interceptions or something. While he was perfectly healthy. If the Jags were even remotely in contention for a playoff spot, Gabbert would still be on the active roster.
Says the fan of Eli Manning's team. Lil Bro was 24 before he won his first NFL game. Had a passer rating of 50 or something his rookie year. After being the first overall pick of the draft and costing the Giants an arm and a leg to trade for him. His second season wasn't much better. Gabbert looks like Dan Marino compared to early Eli. Which wasn't even that early. Gabbert will be a three year vet when he turns 24.
I counted ELEVEN quarterbacks who will be starting this weekend who have lower passer ratings than Gabbert. Andrew Luck is the only one who is even within a year of his age.
Crapbert
Gabbert still could be a useful QB in this league. Sanchez is not, nor has ever been, nor likely will ever be a useful QB in the NFL. Some QBs fail because of their development (Alex Smith, Jason Campbell, David Carr), some fail because of injuries/physical limitations (Chad Pennington, Daunte Culpepper, Byron Leftwich), and some fail because they have rocks for brains (Jamarcus Russell, Mark Sanchez, Matt Leinart).
Gabbert's problems have been on blitz pickups and reads. With a consistent system and some time to develop he could become as valuable as Alex Smith. Even with his poor season he showed some promise in a few games. He's not a rocket scientist but he's not a total dolt either. Many good QBs have been bad early in their careers. For some reason Gabbert has become some sort of meme on this site - probably because his team isn't that good either. But there are way worse QBs currently in the NFL, and probably 5 or so are starters.
