Canucks take Swedish winger, Edmonton d-man in draft
June 27, 2009
The Vancouver Canucks selected Swedish winger Anton Rodin in the second round and Edmonton-born defenceman Kevin Connauton in the third round of the 2009 NHL entry draft.
Scouting reports put Rodin, the 53rd selection overall, as a wild-card pick in the draft because of a "boom-or-bust" profile. Criticisms are that he's undersized and lacks strength to deal with NHL defenders, but he has scoring potential. Rodin clocked 29 goals in 37 games with his Brynas IF uner-20 team last season placing second in points.
Connauton, who just tied up his freshman season at Western Michigan University, was passed over in the 2008 draft was the 83rd pick overall. At 185 pounds, he will have to bulk up to reach NHL potential, but scouting reports list him as having "a projectable frame" and an attitude to be effective on the ice.
