I think it's the fact that he's an idiot but he wants to remain relevant and he sees defending "traditional marriage" as the only option as an increasingly irrelevant position.

He has a tough choice though. He can't be both a senate and presidential candidate. He will also be running against a rich actress (if Ashley Judd runs).
Just keep in mind though, he isn't his father.
I would certainly buy it more if Idaho or Texas was making movements into that type of breakdown for their electoral votes. I wish I had a solution to gerrymandering but I just don't. One rule that I might consider putting into place is that districts may have no more than X number of sides to them (meaning you couldn't have a district that looks like Italy or worse almost completely circles a city.
