A protein bar that was left partially unwrapped overnight in the refrigerator. It's hard as a brick now and was left too close to a clove of garlic.

So it's like eating frozen cat vomit.

Sweet, I saw that movie. I forgot initially what got me into juicing, but I'm glad I do it now. Just one thing though I may move on to a Vitamix or other blender to mix these ingredients. The only negative with juicing is you have all that pulp leftover, and lost nutrients

Well as far as nutrients, I think the key is getting a good masticating juicer and not one of those crazy fast, loud (1,000,000,000,000 rpms!!!!) infomercial juicers. Those just heat up and lose nutrients and don't even get all the juice.

I got lucky b/c someone got me one of these for my b-day a few years ago: http://www.omegajuicers.com/juicers/masticating-juicers/juicer-8005.html

Everything from wheat grass to whatever vegetable. It presses everything out so nothing lost. Sometimes I throw the pulp back in b/c I like it pulpy and its good fiber, but don't really need it.

Guac is awesome but I can never find a really good one like some restaurants have. Any suggestions?

yes, you don't find it, you MAKE it!!

I make it a little different everytime. Ultimately I just like avocados so my basic guac is just mashed cado with garlic, lime, salt and pepper. Sometimes a little chili powder or like a teaspoon of salsa/picante sauce b/c my wife likes it.

If I'm having company I'll go a little nicer: 2 cados, 2 or 3 garlic cloves, 2 tomatillos diced, 1 jalapeno (no seeds), 1 small roma tomato diced, 1/4 lime squeezed in, handful of chopped cilantro, salt&pepper.

There's a ton of different ways to go with it....sometimes with diced mango (i don't like that though). Basically all you need is avocado and salt. Everything else is to taste.

GGGGG-Men
07-30-2012, 01:35 AM
Oh and what is key is getting a good ripe avocado. Always hass (the smaller ones) not mushy, but not hard. Should have just a little give when you press by the stem and just a little give on the bottom.

Just ate at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill in NYC. Pretty disappointed

Yeah, it's not worth the price. Most of his stuff isn't anything so grand that you can't do it at home.

Of the celebrity chefs, I've heard Mario Batali's place in NYC is better. Lupa or something??

Wolfgang Puck's Vegas restaurant is equally disappointing. Gordon Ramsay's at the London in L.A. is great though.

just got back from scarpetta in miami beach

the mrs. had creamy polenta with truffled crimini mushrooms and spaghetti with tomato sauce. i had braised short ribs and porchetta with cannelini beans.

everything was outstanding. the bread basket with the salami and moozarel stromboli slices was out of this world. i had to ask for THIRDS of the bread basket, and at one point flatly asked for just stromboli and none of the other breads. the polenta was ****ing awesome. it was a creamy, rich, mushroomy porridge of goodness. the spaghetti was probably one of the top-3 best pasta dishes i've ever had, regardless of its simplicity. the noodles were very clearly fresh and the sauce was exploding with depth and a multitude of flavors (herbs, oils, ripe tomatoes, garlic).

my dishes were over the ****ing top. the short rib was so tender, i could barely pick it up with my fork, and the sauce it came with was decadent. but the porchetta was just a ****ing sinful dish. for those who don't know what it is, porchetta is basically roasted pork loin (often stuffed with herbs and stuffing), wrapped in pork belly.

dessert was really memorable too (and i'm usually not a dessert guy). i had coconut panna cotta with guava and mango gelee. lolo has some coffee ice cream/nutella/chocolate/raspberry concoction that was a tad too sweet for my palate.

overall, a 9/10

I've only tried to make Indian cuisine once. I put together a pretty tasty tikka masala, but there was so much prep and so many ingredients involved that I never did it again...mainly because there's a local Indian restaurant that does half-price every night. The effort:reward ratio is skewed heavily in favor of just waiting until 9.

If anybody's got some good recipes though, I might take another stab.
