hahaha... i already know what your going to say... but this is too funny (sad?)

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday that he and Cuban ally Fidel Castro risk being more conservative than U.S. President Barack Obama

"Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right," Chavez joked on a live television broadcast.

Fun.

Not as much fun as this from the Atlantic, though (http://business.theatlantic.com/2009/06/now_that_the_government_owns_general_motors.php). (graph (http://business.theatlantic.com/percentage%20of%20american%20companies%20owned%20b y%20the%20united%20states.png))

smth... the person who commented first on the artcile made a great point..

Well, if you really want to include all of the businesses that the United States owns, you have to include the US Postal Service, Medicare and Medicaid, as well as all of the Public Educational Institutions. I say this because if a there is a private sector competitor with whom the US's entity would compete, I would classify that entity as a business, and hence a "company" to use your term.

I would like to know when Obama does something socialist. Because apparently nothing he does is. I have no issue saying the last few 6 months or so of the Bush administration were socialist, why can't Dems concede the same about the first two and half months about the Obama administration?

We live in a mixed economy. Period. I sell insurance (private enterprise) that compliments Medicare. I have friends who sell insurance (once again private enterprise) that compliments Medicaid. The public school system buys books from publishers (private enterprise) and frankly, I get packages and envelopes from the post office, and fed ex, UPS, and others.

Why are we having this discussion, when no one here, myself included, has ever not lived in a mixed economy?

Because the term "socialist" is being used by the right with a very negative connotation. It is a term to inspire fear. Most people don't fully understand the tenets of socialism, but when they hear politicians being called socialists, they get nervous. This is the way the right has framed their argument against Obama, which is totally fine. But in that case, no, I won't concede to Obama being socialist. Because thats the type of thing that just ends up as a talking point more than a classification of his policies, and thats exactly the type of thing the right would use to fuel the fires.

Because it's just a bunch of fluffed up hype.

What American "Socialism" Looks Like

Obama's only been in office a few months in a steep depression but the ideological right already sees socialism here. For a little reality check, here's a chart from Conor Clarke of government control of the economy (click the link for the details):

But the thing is those are long standing government entitlement programs which Obama did not create. When people make the claim that "Obama is turning America into a socialist country!", I think the above chart is a pretty incontrovertible rebuttal that proves just how exaggerated those claims really are.

No, he's really not. Real socialists (rightfully) scoff at the notion:

Obama administration targets the working class (http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/may2009/pers-m30.shtml)

When Will We March Against Obama? (http://www.socialistviewpoint.org/marapr_09/marapr_09_15.html)

so like...the socialistviewpoint site you posted up has ads for loose change and other "the gubnent did 9/11" ads....

do you take any thought credibilty from a site like that?

just a personal question.. no right or wrong answer

I honestly don't know. I just googled "socialist news" and those were the first 3 sites that came up, so I figured they were probably fairly representative of the views of people who actually subscribe to socialist doctrine and consider themselves socialists. And I'm not saying they should be (or shouldn't be) listened to. What I am saying is that it's silly as hell to call Obama a socialist, and doing so does nothing more than betray a lack of understanding of what the hell socialism is. If anything, Obama is much more of a corporatist/capitalist than a socialist.

Now here's someone who definitely is worth listening to, Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks, speaking about Obama's too-cozy relationship with Goldman Sachs, and the disappointment of progressives about Obama's failure to implement regulation of the financial sector:
