The Milwaukee Brewers roster could soon have another new face.

The Baltimore Sun reported on its web site Tuesday that the Brewers may be nearing a deal with outfielder Jay Gibbons, who has not been able to catch on with a major league club since being released by Baltimore Orioles in late March.

The Brewers’ front office has been aggressive in recent weeks as the club tries to secure its first playoff berth since 1982. The team acquired reigning American League Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians earlier this month and made a deal with the San Francisco Giants over the weekend for veteran infielder Ray Durham.

The signing of Gibbons is not likely to affect the Brewers immediately, however, as the club reportedly is considering only a minor league deal. An announcement could come as early as Tuesday, according to the Sun.

Gibbons, 31, has been playing with the independent Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks and has hit .280 with five home runs over 27 games.

In seven injury-plagued seasons with the Orioles, Gibbons batted .260 with 121 home runs and 405 RBI.

Gibbons’ career took a serious hit last December when his name appeared in the Mitchell Report, and he subsequently admitted using human growth hormone to help him recover from injuries.

Since his release, Gibbons has had no takers and went as far as to write a letter to the other 29 major league teams, apologizing for his mistakes and saying he would play for free in the minors.

The Orioles are paying Gibbons a total of $11.9 million for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Anyways...blah. He's okay, had some power even post-steroids.

Probably will be a September call-up.

He plays in the OF which will be fine to have probably for just when the rosters expand.

Signing a guy like Gibbons to a minor league deal can never hurt. He had a couple great years and would be a nice left-handed bat off the bench when rosters expand. He can play both corner outfield positions and first base, which helps as well.

I like it, as long as the expectations are pretty much zero. He hasn't looked good post-roids but either way he's decent insurance to have, I guess.
